PLGIN Modules on Practical Empathy

The Physician Health Program offers CME accredited Peer-Led Group Interaction (PLGIN) modules
developed specifically for physicians to create awareness and provide practical skills around the topics
of burnout, resilience, professionalism and collegiality. There is a growing body of research that
suggests when physicians have greater empathy, mindfulness and healthier relationships both with
themselves and others, there is a higher degree of safety and satisfaction in the workplace.
The intention of the modules is to engage participants in conscious conversation and provide smallgroup
experiential learning opportunities to improve Physician health and wellness. The benefits of the
five PLGIN modules include:

  • CME accredited
  • One hour in length
  • Can be combined to make a longer session
  • Small group learning with 5-8 participants
  • Peer-led
  • Meet a number of the non-medical expert competencies from the CanMeds roles such as Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Scholar and Health Advocate
  • Free of charge

These modules are designed to stimulate curiosity and learning through a series of experiential exercises and group discussion. Each of the five modules focuses on a different psychosocial context, and suggests the value of a particular skill:

  1. Taking Care of Ourselves: Reflection
  2. Taking Care of Each Other: Check-ins
  3. Taking Care of Boundaries: Hearing and Saying ‘No’
  4. Taking Care of Learning: Feedback
  5. Taking Care of the System: Advocacy
